Do you love RIEDEL glasses but only use them for special occasions? The stemless glasses will revolutionise your every day wine enjoyment! To mark the 20th anniversary of these revolutionary stemless glasses we’re holding a RIEDEL Winewings Stemless Masterclass. Everyone attending will not only be treated to a fantastic experience but will go home with their own set of these glasses.
RIEDEL’s John Hinckley will be joining Diana (Wine Events Scotland) to present these versatile (and dishwasher safe!) glasses for this fascinating tasting. It’s a unique chance to discover why these different glasses, designed for different styles of wines, have become so popular. John will be speaking about how and why the different shape of glass makes a significant difference to the aroma and taste profile of a wine. Using RIEDEL’s Stemless WineWings range, we’ll have the opportunity to experience this for ourselves, tasting wines ideal for each of the three classic glass styles and discover how they compare when served in the “wrong” glass. It’s quite an eye opener which has continued to surprise many for many years.
The Experience:
It will be a sit down tasting and everyone attending will be given a set of the three glasses to take home which are worth over £50 yet tickets for the masterclass and this whole experience are just £55.
The experience and glasses are bound to bring a whole new dimension to your wine enjoyment.
The Winewings Range:
In the Summer of 2018, Georg was asked by a customer to create “the ultimate glass” for Cabernet Sauvignon, a project which was to provide the inspiration behind RIEDEL Winewings. Slowly, a new shape emerged: A flat-bottomed glass, wide and reminiscent of the wing of an aircraft, complete with winglets. Over the course of a year, through many tastings and by making changes to shape, size and rim diameter, RIEDEL Winewings was born and was about to take flight expanding into glasses for other varietals.
To explain the concept of RIEDEL Winewings: a flat and stretched bottom, with a wing-like shape was chosen to increase the surface area between wine and air, which increases the levels of evaporation and develops a greater intensity of aroma. When positioning one’s head to the glass, the nose is closer and is exposed to the wider surface of the wine. However, this alone would not fully deliver the optimal aroma of each grape variety and so, to capture the delicate layered aromas, it was necessary to curve the glass walls and to correctly calibrate the opening of each glass with its ideal rim diameter.
A Bit More Technical Information:
When developing a glass, Riedel’s design ideas are not born on a drawing board, but shaped by trial and error with the help and support of the world’s greatest palates. A person interested in wine is led by colour, bouquet and taste, but often the glass is not considered as an instrument to convey the wine’s message. for over 260 years, Riedel has acquired some interesting scientific explanations as to why the shape of a glass influences the bouquet and taste of alcoholic beverages.
The first discovery was made while enjoying wine. The same wine displayed completely differently characteristics when served in a variety of glasses. The differences were so great that experienced connoisseurs were made to believe that they were tasting different wines. The grape variety is the key factor in determining the relationship between fruit, acidity, tannin and alcohol. As the next step, Riedel was able to create shapes in which the wine, made from specific grape varieties, seemed to improve. They soon started to recognize the complex role that size and shape play in conveying the message of a fine wine.
Tasting Format:
We will start promptly at 6.30pm and will be tasting 3 wines highlighting how they change in different glasses. The experience is expected to last an hour an a half. John will also be talking about glass care and a bit about the stunning Riedel decanters. We’ll then enjoy some cheese and charcuterie nibbles over another glass of wine and a chat.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
