Crowe documents the journey from the Scottish Borders to the islands of Orkney and back again, introducing the viewer to the varied landscapes captured along the way.
Low Winter Sun offers a voyage of revelation which reflects Crowe’s ability to communicate in all media, from fluid mediums and oils to gun tufted rugs. As part of an artist residency with the Royal Scottish Academy and the Pier Arts Centre in 2022, Victoria Crowe made two trips to Orkney, with a particular desire to explore the contrasting light of the summer and winter solstices. Visiting in June and again in November, when Orkney only experiences six hours of daylight, Crowe presented herself with the challenge of capturing the fastchanging environment.
Drawn to the beauty of the moon illuminating the landscape of the islands, Crowe quickly adapted her practice to catch the subtleties and dramatic shifts of the landscapes.
