Step into the world of ancient art and discover the beauty of Dunhuang cave paintings in this 2-hour hands-on workshop.
Using authentic mineral pigments and clay boards, you’ll recreate the sacred imagery of murals that have lasted over a thousand years.
Cultural Background
Dunhuang’s murals, created over a span of 1,000 years, combine Buddhist, Daoist, and local cultural imagery.
They embody China’s ancient craftsmanship, colour theory, and spiritual symbolism.
Theme: Guanyin with Willow Branch 持 柳 观 音
Cave: Mogao Cave 405, Tang Dynasty (c. 750–780 CE)
Symbolism: Compassion, healing, salvation
Details: Based on Lotus Sutra: Universal Gate Chapter of Avalokiteś vara
Dunhuang pigments are made from natural minerals such as azurite (blue), malachite (green), cinnabar(red), and orpiment (yellow).
The palette follows the traditional Five Colours (五色): red, blue-green, yellow, black, and white — creating vibrant contrasts of warmth and coolness.
Workshop Overview:
• Introduction: Brief talk about Dunhuang & colour symbolism
• Material demo: Learn to mix mineral pigments with natural binder
• Painting: Apply colour layers using Chinese brushes
• Detailing: Add highlights and refine texture
• Finishing: Frame and share your artwork
Painting with pigments is not only an artistic process, but also a meditative one -- reconnecting hand, mind, and spirit.
Many participants describe it as a moment of calm, focus, and healing.
