Walking into the installation you are transported under a seascape where steel fishing nets take on sealife-like forms, where fish with human faces sprout mushrooms and where the once fertile ground seems to scream out as it turns to sand. Each sculptural piece is a comment on an element of capitalist food production and the devastation it leaves in its wake. The materials we encounter: metal, mycelium, soya wax, sand, rhododendron petals, the hair of a domesticated animal, have each been meticulously selected as symbols of different elements of human driven environmental destruction. When taken in as a whole, the installation describes how capitalism endangers all life on earth, and implores us to remember that the fates of humans and non-human animals are intrinsically intertwined.
About the Artist
Eilidh is a Scottish multidisciplinary artist. Through the practice of mould making and casting, her sculptural works are reminiscent of forms already known to us. This process of reproduction allows objects to take on an appearance that is instantly recognisable and comforting, while the contrasting choice of material creates a sense of the uncanny: a mistrust in the familiar. She is interested in how this process mirrors the reproductive role of women in a capitalist society, creating a continuity in her work between subject matter and material practice. These cast objects are often intertwined with steel, pulling at our association with industry and asking us to critique capitalist and patriarchal power structures.
CATALYST: Art as Activism
Summerhall arts presents a season of four solo exhibitions by artists whose work advocates for social, political, environmental, or cultural change.
