Holyrood Boxing Gymnasium was situated in a former Victorian brewery. Repurposing a part of Edinburgh’s industrial heritage, the building was transformed from a space once filled with workers into a space filled with amateur boxing.
A long-standing part of working class culture. Brad Welsh created not only a boxing gym, but a community. More than just a coach, his role was one of pastoral care. Recognising the challenges facing people in the wider community, particularly young men, and providing leadership, guidance and encouragement.
HBG's development over the 18 years was the result of the collective effort of many individuals. Creating a gym open to all. Young and old, male and female, black and white. The gym provided a welcoming and mutually supportive environment where people from all backgrounds and all abilities could get fit, meet people and develop positive relationships that will last a lifetime.
Anna Isola Crolla's creative perspective has captured the essence and power of Holyrood Boxing Gym with an artist's eye.
