Water Pilgrimage invites you on a walking day retreat, with a focus on story of place. Journeying throughout the day, we will walk, reflect and explore the coast as a living and breathing landscape. Beginning in Musselburgh Lagoons, we will follow the John Muir Path along to Aberlady Bay, ending in the nature reserve. Musselburgh Lagoons offers a refuge for thousands of migrating birds every year and their presence is abundant along the coast: home to curlews, oystercatchers, redshanks and many more!
A hugely varied and historical landscape, the walk will take us through lagoons, fishing towns, an old power station, harbours and nature reserves. Plant life scatters itself along this coastal walk, with golden ribbed melilot, sea rocket and marram grasses softening the shoreline.
Leave from Musselburgh Lagoons Car Park, EH21 7QE

The act of pilgrimage is a journey that has been taken by people for centuries across the planet. For spiritual, religious and or healing purposes, pilgrimage finds itself practised across many cultures. It is often an act of sacred walking with intention in search of meaning and transformation. By tuning into the physicality of the body, a pilgrimage can invite us to step into a repetitive rhythm of walking across a landscape over longer periods of time. Experiencing place, in a sensorial state, we can come into full contact with the extremity of the elements as well as the physical demands of the body. The ache in our feet, the harsh winds or the hot sun - all interacting with us in a full and immediate way.
Pilgrimage can invite a potent state of walking and with those we encounter - be it another person, plant or animal; all can reveal stories of place and perhaps stories about ourselves. Meaning is imbued in who and what we come into contact with on the path. What happens in the space between the first step and the last is where unexpected encounters with otherness can arrive and even surprise us!
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
