About Alice Thornton’s Cafe

A free event for everyone.

**Location: Starbank House, Starbank Park, Newhaven, Edinburgh EH5 3BR**

Researchers on the Alice Thornton’s Books project at The University of Edinburgh will be at the cafe to tell you about Alice Thornton's writing from the 17th Century. Reserve places for short talks taking place at 11am or 1:30pm (talk recommended for adults and children age 8 and over). We'll offer you a free tea/coffee and cake while you discover Alice Thornton's thoughts on family life, faith, plants and health, as well as some very unusual ailments and historic cures. At the end of each talk, the Friends of Starbank Park will lead a short tour through the park's many secret corners, including some brand new 17th-century themed planting.

All are welcome to drop in any time between 11 am and 2:30 pm for free herbal remedy-themed crafts and simply enjoying the park.

This event is part of Being Human Festival, the UK’s national festival of the humanities, taking place 9–18 November 2023. Led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London, with generous support from Research England, in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy.
