About Lunchtime Lectures with Jess Smith
A series of lunchtime lectures delving into the historical and cultural background of storytelling. Discover the link between Scottish and Eastern European Folktales, the importance of the Traveller communities and traditions, and learn about some of storytelling’s major collectors as well as their importance to Scotland and the world of international traditional narrative.
Soup provided too, so come along and feed the body and the soul.
Jess Smith: "When I was a child, life for me had two routes - summer and winter, one as important as the other, winter was settling, school and house people which meant that night came early, packed with tales about the dark, ghosts and high walls. Summer with long warm days, beach combing and countryside wandering along narrow winding roads was where I existed, hearing tales of ancient times with goblins, urisks and fairyfolk was my education. I wore a cultural blanket woven for me by generations of storytellers. Leaving my childhood behind didn't mean I grew away from those wonders, I grew up yes, but the stories came with me. There is nothing I love more than sharing my cultural story. Life ends as nature dictates but the wings of eternal tales live on to fly within us all."
