About Fatma Said and Malcolm Martineau

Soprano Fatma Said was the first Egyptian vocalist to perform at La Scala, Milan, as Pamina in Mozart’s The Magic Flute, and more recently took part in the BBC’s prestigious New Generation Artists project from 2016 to 2018. She has a voice that floats effortlessly with iridescent colours, a larger-than-life stage personality and an extensive repertoire that takes in opera, Broadway musicals, jazz and songs from her Egyptian homeland.

Joined by Edinburgh-born pianist Malcolm Martineau, Said makes her International Festival debut with a captivating programme that ranges from the elegant to the exotic.

Mozart’s songs are sometimes overlooked amid the genius of his symphonies, concertos and operas, but they’re gems of concision and dramatic power. Discover five of them with Said and Martineau, from the spooky 'Die Zauberer' to the charming 'Das Vielchen'. They continue with Ravel at his most exotic in exuberant settings of Greek folk songs and in the dreamy rapture of Scheherazade.

Said and Martineau end their recital in Spain. Federico García Lorca is best known as a poet and playwright, but he was immersed in music all his life and composed extensively. Discover three of his best-loved musical creations – the jaunty 'Anda, jaleo', the dark lullaby 'Nana de Sevilla' and the vivacious 'Sevillanas del Siglo XVIII' – as well as the infectious rhythms of the Seven Popular Spanish Songs by Lorca’s great friend Manuel de Falla.
