Here are five facts that make it a must-visit for history lovers of all ages. With Kids Go Free this summer (30 June – 15 August 2025), it’s even easier to enjoy everything on offer.
1. The Original Home of the Stone of Destiny
For centuries, the Stone of Destiny, the sacred coronation stone of Scottish Kings, was housed at Scone. Monarchs were crowned while seated on it, making Scone the symbolic heart of Scottish kingship.
2. Kings Were Crowned on Moot Hill
Known as the “Hill of Belief,” Moot Hill was the official crowning site of Scottish Kings. Visitors today can stand on the hill and pose on the replica Stone of Destiny, a rite of passage for any future monarchs-in-the-making.
3. A Political and Religious Power Centre
Scone was not only the royal residence but also a major religious hub, with an Augustinian Abbey attracting pilgrims and powerful figures from across the country during the Middle Ages.
4. Royal Intrigue and Rebuilding
The current Palace is a stunning example of Gothic Revival architecture, rebuilt in the early 1800s by the Earls of Mansfield. The Palace’s collection includes heirlooms, portraits, and stories from some of Scotland’s most turbulent eras.
5. A Legacy That Lives On
Even after the Stone was removed to Westminster in 1296, Scone’s symbolic power endured. Today, visitors walk the same paths as kings, rebels, and nobles who shaped the nation’s story.
