Speaking up is about volume… but volume isn’t about how loud you are, its about the words you choose to say and the truths they hold.
Activising for Change, an Edinburgh based emerging theatre company, will be touring their multi-disciplinary performance: 147Hz Can’t Pass to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this summer. It is an invitation to cast out the narrative you know. It is life, not preconceptions or assumptions. It is a celebration of queer experience and an introduction through person not definition to trans non binary gender identity.
Multi-disciplinary performer Ink Asher Hemp, founder of Activising for Change, describes the piece as a calculated mess of movement, spoken word and slam-style poetry. “it does not seek permission and offers no apology. Instead, a marginalized voice occupies the space, taking what is often portrayed as alienating and revealing it to be relatable.”
On why they believe the trans non-binary experience should be communicated through this medium, Ink elaborates:
“Theater is the medium I reach for when I wish to start a conversation and this is a conversation I feel we need to be having as a society. A word of advice often given to emerging artists is not to make “issues” pieces, but rather to make a piece about a character and let the “issue” shine through. However, I deliberately chose to make this piece explicit. I do not feel this is because of some innate feelings of defiance but rather because unlike the media may have you believe, we do not get out of rainbow beds, eat special Trans cereal, and dress only in green, purple and white. Put simply, our “Trans-ness” would not shine through in the story because our lives are pretty bogstandardly normal”.
During the performance Activising for Change aims to create a space that is safe and welcoming for all, an environment where trans people can relax and feel validated, a space where people who support the community can themselves feel supported and a place where people who feel less aware of the challenges faced by the trans community aren’t demonised but instead feel able to learn.
147Hz Can’t Pass will be performed as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe at Greenside @ Infirmary Street (Venue 236) on selected dates from 13th – 25th August.
