November Group formed in 2025 as a string trio with the aim of performing Paul Research's "Fragments In Time", a solo violin and electronics suite merging contemporary classical music and futuristic sound synthesis. They now perform as a quartet, having incorporated a spatial sound designer (Colin Bendall) as an integral group member.
November Group is based in Edinburgh, and includes the talented multi-instrumentalist Julia Lee on violin, piano and other keyboards - Julia is also a regular church organist - and Allan Radcliffe on cello. Allan is a highly respected novelist: The Old Haunts and newly-published Blurred Faces are both available on Fairlight Books. The ensemble is led by Paul Research (violin and synth) who is well-known as the founder and guitarist of Scars, an influential Edinburgh post-punk band. Like Julia and Allan, he performs regularly with Scottish Sinfonia.
November Group's music is highly melodic, occasional atonal, and often influenced by 20th century classical music. The conventional instruments are supplemented by granular synthesis effects on violin, and incidental samples which are deployed kinetically during performances. This framework also integrated for the spoken-word pieces, most notably the poem "Alchemy" by Edinburgh-based artist Mira Knoche.
November Group wishes to thank the Central Music Library for its support and the use of its resources.
