Citadel Arts Group's Leith Customs is a new play based on the stories and memories of a group of retired custom house officials who worked at Leith Custom House in the 1970s - when everything was changing.
Everyone seemed to come to Custom House and there were some strange encounters. Seamen had their discharge books stamped. The watchmen from the whisky bonds returned the bond keys, often the worse for wear. Sea captains paid dues for the many goods brought in and out of the busy port. Local betting shop owners reluctantly paid taxes here; ordinary folk even renewed their dog licences.
Citadel's show captures the vibrant life of the port with comedy and pathos as the cast of three slip in and out of a variety of roles. The promenade performance takes place in and around the site where the events actually took place.
Venue: Leith Custom House, 65-67 Commercial Street Edinburgh EH6 6JE
There will be a Q and A after the show on 10th August.
