An expert seminar as part of the Talking Europe weekend, organised by the Scottish Council on Global Affairs is taking place at Summerhall on Sunday 12th May.
About The time has come? The future of European Security and defence
In 1993, the Maastricht Treaty introduced the concept of a Common Foreign and Security Policy for the European Union. It was pre-dated by over 40 years by the North Atlantic Treaty, and the rejection of the European Defence Community Treaty.
The world has changed rapidly - in the former Yugoslavia, Ukraine, Georgia, Gaza, Syria and beyond. US support for NATO is questioned as never before, while the UK seeks a place in security and defence from outside of the EU.
An expert panel of academics and diplomats will look at what has changed, why, and what might lie ahead - for the continent and for the UK and Scotland.
