It demonstrates the breadth of their work in terms of subject matter as well as media (watercolour, gouache and oil paintings as well as charcoal drawings). There is also a shared depth to their work, based on keen observation but also a common reverence for nature.
Fiona Clucas lives in South Cumbria and takes inspiration from the wild places around her as well as on trips to the Lake District and Scotland. Many of her paintings are inspired by working outside in the field, while her large charcoal studio drawings are a further reflection on these experiences. Above all her work tries to capture the spirit of these wild places.
Derek Robertson divides his time between Fife and the Isle of Skye. Here, he presents work from different series inspired by varied habitats: the Isle of May, Skye and the Tay reedbeds which he has studied for a long time.
The exhibition also includes work from his recent book project: Bho Bheul an Eoin, which created Gaelic names for species of plants and animals newly established in Scotland.
