Every year the Chaplaincy hosts an annual public lecture. Looking at a current issue or scientific development, the lecture explores the relationship of science and faith. Are they mutually exclusive, or might they combine to offer deeper insights into the world as we know it? Heriot-Watt is a University with an emphasis on STEM subjects, but also prides itself in being a place where faith can be openly spoken about and explored.
This year we are delighted to welcome back Professor John Wyatt to give the annual lecture on the subject of Transhumanism – Making Better Humans. He will consider how technological human enhancement is moving from the dreams of science fiction to hard reality. From enhanced soldiers, brain-computer interfaces, moral enhancement technology, digital avatars and radical life extension, what will the future hold for humanity? Prof Wyatt will explore the startling possibilities of enhancement technology and ask what these advances mean for human flourishing and the future of Homo Sapiens.
John has previously inspired annual lecture audiences at Heriot-Watt. John is Emeritus Professor of Neonatal Paediatrics, Ethics and Perinatology at UCL. He has a longstanding interest in ethical and philosophical dilemmas raised by advances in biomedical medical and digital technologies and is a well-known speaker, writer and blogger. Current research interests include companion robots and medical applications of AI.
The Chaplaincy Annual Public Lecture consistently draws a large audience and has become a key fixture in the Heriot-Watt University calendar. We would be delighted if you were able to join us at the James Watt Centre on campus for what promises to be a very interesting and thought-provoking evening.
