A sneak preview into a forthcoming book on British art during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, this talk focuses on Raeburn’s understudied portraits of military sitters from the officer class. Viccy will highlight the distinct stages that were marked in a man’s life, how these were habitually cut short by death on battlefields and military operations, and how artists like Raeburn became known for delivering a service to create posthumous martial portraits.
Viccy Coltman is a Professor in History of Art at the University of Edinburgh. She is the author of three books, plus two edited volumes, including, most recently: Art & Identity in Scotland: A cultural history from the Jacobite rising of 1745 to Walter Scott, (Cambridge University Press, 2019). Viccy’s current wartime project has been supported by fellowships from the Paul Mellon Centre and Brown University in the USA. She is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and Scotland, a Trustee of the Jacobite Studies Trust and an advisory board member of the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art.
