Allan Cameron: A Woman’s War, Against Progress!

About Allan Cameron: A Woman’s War, Against Progress!

Blackwell's Edinburgh is welcoming Allan Cameron to the shop on Tuesday 21st November at 7pm in conversation with writer James Robertson. to talk about his majestic tenth book, A Woman's War Against Progress, which confronts the suppression of minority cultures and tackles how progress is used or abused in order to worsen the living conditions of humanity.

This memoir follows the plight of the fictional Surelikud and tells the story of an intricate, detailed journey confronting the personal costs of the fervent desire to change society.

To some degree this is a political novel, but much more than that it is a novel about political activism: its sacrifices, its perilous nature, and its tendency in success to corrupt and undermine an activist’s sense of self.

Allan Cameron was born in 1952, and grew up in Nigeria and Bangladesh, where he witnessed the toxic effects of so-called neo-colonialism. As a young adult he lived in Italy and has translated 26 books – both novels and academic non-fiction – from Italian. He has written three novels: The Golden Menagerie (Luath Press, 2004), The Berlusconi Bonus (Luath Press, 2005), and Cinico (Vagabond Voices, 2017). He has also written two collections of short stories (2011 and 2012), two poetry collections (2009 and 2016), as well as non-fiction work on language, writing and printing, In Praise of the Garrulous (2008) and a collection of essays, Things Written Randomly in Doubt(2014). Allan lives in Glasgow and Italy.
