Ever wondered what goes on in the mind of a serial killer - or what really happened in the West Port Murders? Then come join author Carol Margaret Davison as she discusses her new book Bodysnatcher at the one and only Edinburgh Dungeons!
Bodysnatcher is an intensely dark and thrilling account of the Burke and Hare murders as told through the form of Burke’s final confession, along with the contrasting accounts narrated by his partner Helen McDougal, whose role in the murders has been the subject of much debate. Weaving together actual historical figures and accounts with speculations about a dark, increasingly violent relationship, Bodysnatcher is a powerful and sophisticated Gothic tale of poverty, desperation, love, and loss set against the backdrop of nineteenth-century Scotland, a country in the throes of rebellion and transition. In its exposure of the dark side of nations, institutions, and individuals, Bodysnatcher prompts us to reconsider the nature of crime and who the real criminals are.
Burke and Hare’s horrific murders were committed in order to sell fresh corpses to professor of anatomy Robert Knox - and at this event, you’ll experience what it would have been like to be there in the flesh. The author event will be held in the atmospheric surroundings of the Knox’s lecture theatre setting in the Edinburgh Dungeons, where Carol will read excerpts from Bodysnatcher, discuss her book and its historical background, and take questions from the audience.
The event will take place at 7pm on Thursday June 1st. Admission is free, but spaces are limited, so make sure to book your ticket. We look forward to seeing you there!
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
