Join us for our next Star Trek linked talk exploring the blur between science fiction and current science research.
“Resistance is Futile” is not a phrase you often hear in everyday life, and one you never wanted to hear in Star Trek!
Star Trek fans are familiar with 'The Borg'. An alien group that appear as recurring antagonists in the Star Trek fictional universe. But just how close to the Borg are we currently? In this talk, you will hear about the latest work being conducted in prosthetics and human augmentation both in Edinburgh and around the world.
You will see the different ways that a sense of touch is being given back to prosthetics users, how a brain-machine device can help control different devices, how exoskeletons can help grow new nerve tissue and much more. Heriot-Watt University has a broad range of research across robotics and healthcare. We study how robots work for us, beside us, and with us.
Dr Alistair McConnell is Assistant Professor at Heriot-Watt University, focusing on healthcare technologies and soft robotics. His PhD was in Rehabilitation Robotics at Heriot-Watt University. His work has involved the design of different types of prosthetics hands, as well as methods of providing feedback to prosthetics users. He is a keen entrepreneur with experience in both spin-outs and start-ups. Most recently, he co-founded Mask Logic Ltd.
This talk is part of our Places of Science project funded by The Royal Society and working in partnership with Heriot-Watt University.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
