Sergei Rachmaninoff was born on the 1st April 1873 in Semyonovo, Russia. Tonight, exactly 150 years later, we welcome you to join the Àirigh Orchestra for a slice of birthday cake as we celebrate Rachmaninoff's 150th birthday with a concert of his favourite music for piano and orchestra!
This special birthday celebration concert will be performed by the Àirigh Orchestra under the direction of Robert Dick, conductor of the Dundee Symphony Orchestra. Robert will also delight us with his own solo violin playing in a beautiful new arrangement of Rachmaninoff's Vocalise, Op.39 for violin and orchestra.
The Àirigh Orchestra will also be joined by award-winning concert pianist Matthew Shiel, who will close tonight's concert with Rachmaninoff's show-stopping pianistic spectacle, his beloved Piano Concerto No. 2 (Op.18); a concerto which has featured in several Hollywood blockbusters including Brief Encounters (1945) and the Seven Year Itch (1955), starring Marilyn Monroe.
Birthday cake and hot chocolate will be served in interval.
We hope to see you there to mark such an important milestone in our culture landscape and pay tribute to a true musical icon!
