5 Singles in less than 16 months was what it took to put Somebody’s Child front-and-centre of the Irish music scene. “It feels like a long time in the making” however, frontman and songwriter Cian insists about a project which was initially meant to “make a name for himself” so he could write for other artists.
Well, a Late Late Show performance, a 3 arena support-slot, charting 13th in the official homegrown Irish charts, over 20m impacts on radio and almost a million streams later, it’s safe to say the young dubliner has done more than enough to make his mark.
His strength is no longer just in his songwriting either, because when he and his band perform it’s clear they belong on the big stages. Coming from very different musical backgrounds, the group’s chemistry and sound is developing at alarming rates, and the new EP 20-something is huge testament to that.
“20-something is the first real taste of who I want to be as an artist and as a songwriter. It’s inspired by music I actually listen to on a regular basis. Everything before this has just been to test the waters, but for the first time since this started it feels like this is what I’m really about.”
Keen on not shying away from real world problems, his lyrics comment on personal and political issues. In opening himself up, he hopes 20-something connects with the listener on a much deeper level than before. Authentic songwriting, wrapped-up in a sound that could be described as an homage to British Indie-Rock, and we have ourselves a real contender.
