Part of the Catalan Film Festival
With archive material and family super 8mm tapes, director Silvia Subiros reflects on the silenced role of women in the history of cooking and haute cuisine.
All around the world domestic cooking is largely still associated with women, yet most of the world’s top restaurants are run by men. Every year the Michelin Guide announces its list of best restaurants in the world, and year after year the picture is surprisingly monopolized by male chefs, while a recent study showed that just 6% of the world’s top restaurants are ruled by female chefs.
Men’s Kitchen (Cuina dels Homes) takes on this paradox and navigates the personal and the political, starting from her personal story – as a direct heir of El Motel, the restaurant that brought culinary modernity to Spain- to reflect on the wider political implications on the lack of equality in the household.
The film will be followed by a traditional Catalan cuisine menu consisting of several dishes full of Mediterranean flavours.
