“A madcap, motorised cabinet featuring a variety of exotica from the depths of the ocean to the surface of the moon, accompanied by a gruesome, grisly poem.” – ★★★★ The Stage
A Rock and Hard Place is a collection of mini dioramas made up of 4 areas of intrigue: the Earth; the Sky; the Sea; and the Mind. Science was in its infancy back in the 14th century. Many theories about the world existed, some correct but most often completely wrong. Created by Gavin Glover for Puppet Animation Scotland’s Restless Worlds installation in 2020.
Displayed through the window at Fruitmarket to be enjoyed from the street – drop by to imagine a parallel world where migrating birds fly to the moon, pigs quietly copulate in the meadows of a flat Earth and below the fires of Hell burn most of humanity.

After leaving The Little Angel Theatre in London, Gavin Glover went on to co-found Faulty Optic Theatre of Animation which toured its deliciously dark adult puppet shows around the globe for over 20 years. Now freelance and based in Glasgow, Gavin specialises in visual theatre and contemporary puppetry and often collaborates with other artists. He also runs workshops in Micro Cinema Theatre and what he calls Nasty Puppetry. He is currently making short experimental videos.
