In the University of St Andrews Special Collections lies an 800-year-old copy of selected works of St Augustine with several pieces removed from its pages - but why were these cuttings taken?
About January Lecture: Cut Out and Stuck In: Fragments of Medieval Manuscripts in Nineteenth-Century Albums
Nineteenth-century collectors created albums from all kinds of things including cuttings from medieval manuscripts. Few albums now remain intact, yet the way in which these assemblages presented medieval manuscripts has cast a long influence over modern perceptions of medieval books and their value.
Join us online or in person on 19 January 2023, when Professor Margaret Connolly of the University of St Andrews will reveal more about these albums, including how women's involvement with them may have been obscured.
