During her widowhood, Mary of Guelders, Queen of Scots, pursued an energetic programme of architectural patronage, including renovations to Falkland Palace in Fife, and the commissioning of Ravenscraig Castle (Fife) and Trinity Collegiate Kirk and hospital outside Edinburgh. Recent dendrochronology at St Giles’ Kirk in Edinburgh also suggests that her patronage was more extensive than previously thought. Join us free to hear award-winning historian and researcher Dr Rachel Delman explore how Mary’s building projects articulated messages regarding her gender, piety, power and status during her son’s minority.
Dr Rachel Delman is the Heritage Partnerships Coordinator at the University of Oxford. She previously held fellowships at the universities of York and Edinburgh, having completed her doctorate at the University of Oxford in 2017. Rachel’s research investigates women’s patronage of architecture in late medieval Britain. She has published in several major academic journals, including the Journal of Medieval History, Urban History and Viator. Her research on Mary of Guelders is forthcoming as an article in the Scottish Historical Review.
