Nedjma is a young fashion student who longs to create a fashion show that challenges the increasingly conservative orthodoxy of the religious fundamentalism that is engulfing 1990s Algeria. The country is embroiled in a civil war, with Algerian terrorists / freedom fighters seemingly determined to create an Islamic state within the country. Nedjma and her friends and colleagues organise to fight the oppressive nature of the times by putting together a show that asserts women's control over their own bodies and what they choose to wear.
Mounia Meddour's refreshing feature debut was premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and put on the longlist for Best Foreign Language Film at the Oscars.
Notes: (15) sexual violence and strong threat throughout
