About Ratcatcher (1999)

Award-winning Scottish filmmaker Lynne Ramsay (You Were Never Really Here, Morvern Callar) debuted with this 1999 feature about an adolescent boy called James (played by impressive newcomer William Eadie) who lives in one of Glasgow's impoverished housing schemes, in the summer of 1973 as the city is in the grip of a series of binmen strikes (sound familiar?). After the tragic death of a friend, James is hounded by a sense of guilt and seeks a way out of the realities of his family life.

One of the great portraits of Scottish working-class life, during a period when the old industrial heartlands of Glasgow city were making way for the new Thatcherite world to come.

Notes: (15) contains child murder, domestic violence, bad language, scenes of psychological disturbance.
