About ‘Pro Lithuania’: Patriotism in Exile
Felix Yaniewicz, a Polish-Lithuanian emigre, settled in Edinburgh in the early 1800s. But he never lost his attachment to the land of his birth, as witnessed by his surviving personal possessions, passed down the generations: his seal and silver cutlery bear the motto ‘Pro Lithuania’ together with a crest featuring a mailed arm brandishing a curved sword, which can be seen in the exhibition Music & Migration at The Georgian House.
In this illustrated lecture, historian Robert Frost unpacks the story behind Yaniewicz’s motto, and explores what it meant to be a Lithuanian patriot in exile, in a volatile time of political upheaval.
