NEW research suggests almost a quarter of Scots will be heading straight to the pub when the clocks go back this weekend – and one Scottish brewer is giving them the perfect excuse.
A new poll of 1,000 Scots adults, commissioned by one of the nation’s favourite premium lagers, Innis & Gunn, ahead of its free Sunset Sessions events this weekend, found 24% of us would spend an extra hour in the pub if we were given the chance. And good news – this Sunday (October 26) we actually can.
Younger drinkers are even keener to raise a glass, with around a third of Gen Z (30%) – aged 18-28 – and Millennials (36%) – aged 29-44 – saying they’ll be topping up their tanks with an extra round.
And it’s not just the beer drawing crowds. Half of Scots (50%) say live music helps beat the winter blues, a number that climbs even higher among younger generations. Trad is also increasingly the music of choice, with one-in-five Scots (20%) saying they listen to more traditional or folk music now than a year ago – a sign of growing appreciation for Scotland’s musical heritage.
So to toast the turning of the clocks, Innis & Gunn is turning up the volume with free Sunset Sessions gigs across its Taprooms in Glasgow and Edinburgh this Sunday – featuring some of the country’s most exciting young traditional musicians.
Kicking off bang on sunset at 4.50pm, the line-up includes Charlie Stewart, Luc McNally, Cameron Newell, Megan MacDonald, Eryn Rae, Craig Baxter, Tom Callister and more, with each Taproom hosting its own unique set.
Innis & Gunn founder and Master Brewer, Dougal Sharp said: “Scotland’s spoken, and a million of us will get our wish this weekend with an extra hour in the pub!
“If you’re going to spend it anywhere, spend it with pals, a great pint, and some trad tunes. We’ve put this event on to bring a bit of cheer to the start of winter with the clocks going back. We know half of Scots say live music makes winter better, so this is the perfect and to that, and something of a warm-up to Celtic Connections too.”
The Sunset Sessions also mark Innis & Gunn’s countdown to Celtic Connections, the world-famous folk and roots festival which the brewer proudly sponsors again this January.
The research also revealed that one-in-three Scots (34%) wish the clocks never went back at all. Until then, at least there’s one extra hour to raise a glass this Sunday.
Innis & Gunn’s free Sunset Sessions take place on Sunday, October 26 at their Glasgow West End, Glasgow City Centre and Edinburgh Taprooms. Music starts at Sunset, 4.50pm, with punters urged to arrive early to grab your pint and a good spot.
