Leading Scottish housebuilder, Cruden, has made a £2,000 donation to the Mayfield and Easthouses Development Trust (MAEDT) in support of community projects under its Newbyres site, in partnership with Midlothian Council.
The donation is divided into two £1,000 contributions, one supporting the Trust’s gardening project and the other aiding the School Uniform Recycling Project. This donation is part of Cruden’s ongoing commitment to fostering positive community impact in the areas where it operates.
The first £1,000 will support the Trust’s gardening initiatives, including the GLIN Awards with local nursery and school children. The funds will be used to purchase items like pots, plants, soil, utensils, and other essential garden consumables. Additionally, they will contribute towards upgrading the garden’s infrastructure, including creating new paths and providing safe ground for users. The donation will also help cover volunteer expenses.
The second £1,000 will go towards MAEDT's School Uniform Recycling Project. This initiative supports local families by providing pre-loved school uniforms. The donation will help purchase necessary items and support the continued success of the project.
This donation follows Cruden’s partnership with Midlothian Council to deliver a mix of 75 flats, cottage flats, and houses in Gorebridge. The development will include 10 extra care units, two bariatric units, and one four-bedroom, six-person wheelchair-accessible house. Ground was broken on this vital development in August last year, and it is expected to be completed in Summer 2026.
Michael Palethorpe, Production and Community Benefit Manager at Cruden, said: “Mayfield and Easthouses Development Trust (MAEDT) is an excellent organisation that fosters a thriving and vibrant community, engaging with residents throughout Newbyres. We share a similar mission – to support communities with everything they need to succeed and thrive, from high-quality, affordable homes to flourishing green spaces and providing young people with the tools to succeed in school. As a company with deep roots in the area, Cruden is proud to support these efforts alongside our partners.”
Sharon Hill, MAEDT Manager, shared her gratitude: “We are so grateful for this donation. Having a budget for our School Uniform Project means we can purchase items we don’t have, specifically for those who need them. A budget for volunteer expenses also allows us to provide meals and essential equipment for our volunteers. Donations like this really strengthen our organisation – we can respond to needs more flexibly and make a real difference to the people we serve.”
The cheque presentation was attended by Megan Smith, Volunteer at MAEDT, Phil Morris, Development Worker at MAEDT and Michael Palethorpe, Community Benefit Manager at Cruden.
