• The Festival opens on Saturday 25 May and runs until Sunday 2 June, with shows scheduled in venues across Edinburgh, during the day, in the evening and at the weekend to suit both schools and families.
• 14 productions that represent work from 9 different countries unite in a programme that spans circus, dance, music, storytelling and theatre
• The programme explores timely topics such as the environmental crisis, our throw-away culture, war and racial discrimination, in a way that make them accessible to children
The Edinburgh International Children’s Festival opens tomorrow, with a free family day in the National Museum of Scotland, followed by 7 days of inspiring performances for all ages. The Festival runs from 25 May – 2 June and offers a jam-packed programme of circus, dance, storytelling and theatre for young people, their schools and families. Some of the smaller baby shows are now sold-out but most others have available capacity. Highlights include:
• Family pleaser By Trial and Error (for 4-10 yrs) - A hopelessly clumsy pair of acrobats serve their audience with a healthy dose of giggles as they attempt to save their well-oiled routine gone wrong.
• An Ant Called Amy (for 5-9yrs) - An enchanting story about a hard-working ant who has won "Employee of the Month" and just can’t slow down – Irish storytelling at its best!
• TRASHedy (for 11 yrs+) – A high energy spectacle which cheekily looks at how we consume and waste, using a mix of stunts, movements and animated drawings.
• Black (for 12 yrs+) – An emotional dance performance chronicling the freedom movement and reflecting on the violence of being Black today, which will give teenagers food for thought and an opportunity to discuss and reflect.
• A regional focus on Catalonia, with three stunning productions representing the unique vision of artists from this region, as well as four new works and premieres from Scottish companies.
Festival Director, Noel Jordan said:
“I am delighted that once again, this year’s programme pushes the boundaries of what’s expected of children’s theatre and dance, and that the bold themes explored by the artists is equally matched by the appetite of the young audiences attending their shows. Young people are at the heart of this Festival and I’m looking forward to welcoming them, their teachers and their families, for what promises to be a Festival full of special moments - moments that make you gasp, that make you pause and consider, moments of aspiration and sheer artistic inspiration.”
