Sam Ryder delights Edinburgh with surprise festive performance to reward charitable Deliveroo customers

Casually appearing outside The Dome on famous George Street in the Scottish capital, Sam Ryder delighted locals with a unique, acoustic set that included his new single ’You’re Christmas to Me’, as well as festive favourites ‘Jingle Bells’ and ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’.

His performance was a gift to locals from on-demand delivery app, Deliveroo, who revealed Edinburgh residents are the most charitable when it comes to using the in-app roundup function to donate to anti-poverty charity, the Trussell Trust.

Footage capturing the performance shows passers-by looking shocked as they spot the breakthrough singer, who shot to fame during the first COVID lockdown and went on to represent the nation in Europe’s biggest song contest. Curious crowds can be seen gathering as they excitedly recognise Sam before singing along to his seasonal renditions, with many capturing selfies with the singer.

Sam’s performance follows the launch of Deliveroo’s Not So Silent Night Choir last month, a group of off-key carollers led by Shaun Williamson and Honey G. The disastrous ensemble took to the streets of the UK to encourage people to donate to the Trussell Trust via the in-app roundup feature.

And with Edinburgh revealed as the most generous city, this Deliveroo Ryder brought a healthy dose of festive cheer, and thanks, to local residents.

Sam Ryder, singer and songwriter comments: “Christmas is a season to be charitable and it’s great to see the nation supporting the Trussell Trust during what is set to be the most challenging winter yet for food banks across the UK. I was thrilled to be the ‘ryder’ in charge of delivering the legends of Edinburgh a little festive surprise! Merry Christmas!”

This winter, the Trussell Trust expects to provide more than a million food parcels to those facing hardship between December and February, which is one parcel every eight seconds.

Eleanor Garnier, Senior Policy Advisor at Deliveroo, comments: “Christmas is a wonderful time of year for many, but it’s also a really tough time for others, with more and more people needing support from vital services such as the Trussell Trust to cover life’s essentials. So we’re delighted to be able to reward Edinburgh, as the UK’s most charitable city this Christmas, with a performance from such a renowned UK superstar.”

The generous people of Edinburgh have raised enough money to provide over 43,000 meals to food banks in the Trussell Trust network this year*. Across the UK, nearly 3 million meals have been provided to date to people facing hunger in the UK thanks to donations via Deliveroo’s in-app round-up feature.

Customers can find the in-app charity round-up feature on the Deliveroo app as they check out any order, with the option to round up to the nearest pound or make a set donation amount of their choice. All proceeds raised go directly to the Trussell Trust to help provide food and vital support services for people facing hunger.

Emma Revie, CEO of the Trussell Trust comments: “We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported us through this campaign and as a proud Scot, I would like to extend a particular thank you to the people of Edinburgh who were extra generous when rounding up their Deliveroo orders. Our network is facing its most challenging winter yet - we’re expecting to provide an emergency food parcel every eight seconds over the coming months - so every donation truly does matter.”
