This summer is set to be the year of staycations with more people than ever opting to stay in Scotland and enjoy all that it has to offer. What better side to this summer fun than a portion of the tastiest of takeaway treats – fish and chips. Flaky white fish in a crispy batter, thick fluffy chips and magnificent mushy peas, all doused in salt and vinegar, or maybe chippy sauce! It’s the ultimate feel good food that’s sure to please the whole family.
Love Seafood is on a mission to inspire the nation to fall in love with seafood and we’ve partnered with them to bring you this guide on some of the best award-winning fish and chip shops in Scotland, to hopefully provide some inspiration for your next adventure.
Bertie’s Proper Fish & Chips, 9 Victoria Street, Edinburgh
Located in the heart of Edinburgh, Bertie’s Proper Fish & Chips offers both dine in and takeaway options. Occupying the old St John’s Church on Victoria Street, the restaurant is stunning and with a capacity of 300, it might just be Scotland’s biggest fish and chip shop! Despite only being open since 2019, Bertie’s has built a reputation for impeccable fish and chips and has even notched up a national award.
The fish menu focuses on the classics done well, with sustainable haddock and cod both available. They also have perhaps the most sides we’ve ever seen, with nearly 20 different options to choose from.
Merchant Chippy, 155 High Street, Glasgow
Those in the know, know the Merchant Chippy which has a fanatical fanbase. A multi award winner, this traditional fish and chip shop has previously been named the best in Scotland. Here you’ll find fan favorites cod and haddock in amongst the likes of seabass, wholetail scampi, calamari and more, all sourced daily from Anstruther.
You only need to glance at the glowing customer reviews to understand that this shop is a must visit if you’re exploring Glasgow city centre.
Cromars Fish & Chips, 1 Union Street, St Andrews
St Andrews is undoubtedly a fantastic place for a beach day out. Visitors can watch the sun set over the east coast whilst enjoying a superb fish and chip supper. Cromars restaurant and take away is located in the heart of the town with an outside seating area that’s perfect for summer dining. Using only quality local produce, Cromars select the finest and freshest Scottish fish from Peterhead and potatoes from Fife to ensure everything on the plate (or in the takeaway box) is locally sourced.
There is plenty to be enjoyed at Cromars and the menu certainly doesn’t disappoint. From hearty fish and chip suppers to scampi and even vegetarian black pudding, there’s also a wide selection of sides to accompany your feast.
The Tailend, 81 Nethergate, Dundee
There are plenty of options for a chipper in Dundee, but The Tailend is extra special. A multi award winning fish and chip shop that is popular with both locals and tourists alike.
The Tailend is owned by G & A Spink Fish Merchants of Arbroath who supply all the fish fresh daily, so there’s always plenty of variety to be had on their menu. Expect to see hake, halibut, langoustine, lobster, plaice, lemon sole, cod and monkfish to name a few. If that’s not enough to tempt you, take a look at their Instagram page and try not to get hungry! As an added bonus kids eat free every Sunday so it would be silly not to eat here!
The Fish Works, 3, the Promenade, Largs
Husband and wife team Tiffany and Ross Irvin own and operate The Fish Works, another award-winning fish and chip shop offering fresh, quality Scottish seafood, which can be enjoyed with a wonderful view of the Firth of Clyde.
