This year’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch saw residents at Care UK’s Lauder Lodge, on Wakefield Avenue, and Murrayside, on South Beechwood, celebrating the best of British birds with some exciting avian-themed activities.
As part of the celebrations, Lauder Lodge residents were joined by feathered friends from Owl Magic for a special ‘show and tell’ workshop, where residents had the chance to handle the birds and find out more about them. They also had the opportunity to spot native species when they visited the Royal Botanic Gardens for an afternoon of birdwatching.
Meanwhile, at Murrayside, residents teamed up with pupils from Corstorphine Primary School for a special birdwatching session, and also received a special visit from owls brought along by Falconry Scotland.
Nicole Anderson, home manager at Lauder Lodge, said: “Residents love taking part in nature-themed activities here at Lauder Lodge, and we had a lot of fun celebrating this year’s bird-themed event.
“It was great to be able to see the owls up close – you could see from the residents’ reactions just how engaged and thrilled they were – the visit proved to be a real success.”
Home manager at Murrayside, Fran Long, added: “Connecting with nature and wildlife is extremely important for older people, and promotes positive social interaction, improves wellbeing and provides an opportunity for sensory stimulation. This can also be beneficial for those living with dementia, as it can conjure happy memories and the associated emotions.
“I’d like to say thank you to Falconry Scotland for joining us and making the day so special.”
