The exhibition features objects from our museums and galleries collections, including items that have never been on public display. Also featured are contemporary pieces loaned from people all over Edinburgh and beyond, including crochet, knitting, lacemaking, collage and more. The views expressed through these Craftivist works touch on the environment, politics, LGBT+ rights, mental health, feminism, city development and societal change.
Over the last two decades, many craft makers have begun to use their skills to make pieces that express their opinions on contemporary issues. Some pieces are used in public protests or installations, while others might be displayed at home or shared with friends. Edinburgh has become a centre of Craftivist activity due to its position as Scotland’s capital and the home of its Parliament, as well as its strong heritage in teaching and nurturing craft skills.
The groups MindRoom and the City Art Centre South Asian Youth Group have made brand new pieces for display in the exhibition in. Invisible Cities tour guides will also be offering visitors tours of the exhibition.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
