Join us at the Leith FAB Cricket Club to celebrate the launch of Buried with full album band and support from The Good Capers.
Buried is the Debut album from Edinburgh folk singer Emma Capponi. It is an album of folk songs from the collection of Frances James Child. It was recorded in one take in front of a small audience in a friend’s living room. We wanted to capture the feeling of being at a session or ceilidh sharing songs, singing them to one another as they have been for centuries. Recorded by Neil Pennycook (Meursault), and featuring Fionnbarr Byrne, Aoife Boyd, Calum Macleod (Mulac) and William Anderson, this record ventures past traditional roots into an eerie world of drones, loops and close harmonies.
The Child Ballads are a collection of 305 traditional ballads, anthologised by Francis James Child in the second half of the 19th Century, but many of the songs can be traced as far back as the 1600s or earlier. These songs are much older and stranger than you might think. They don't quite fit into our modern moral structure, and are not intended as parables or fables. In a lot of ways they serve a similar purpose to modern horror stories, as an outlet for fears and anxieties, with subject matter that is dark and utterly at odds with the collector’s innocent sounding name. As they have been spread across England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and North America, by oral tradition, they have a tendency to splinter and fragment away from their original meanings, giving us a glimpse into the hearts of our ancestors. When we play them we are reaching back through time and finding connection with the stories told by those who came before us.
The Good Capers are a resonant folk duo hailing from Derby and Manchester. From powerful acapella pieces, to mournful guitar ballads, the fundamental sound of capers is in the lush, wholesome harmonies.
Buried will be available to purchase on the night on limited edition vinyl, alongside other merch. There will also be a zine available featuring the stories behind the songs, sheet music, and original artwork by Emma.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
