A ceramic reflection on everyday forms — held in clay.
This body of work, entitled "Gathered," is the result of Gillian Martin’s four-month artistic residency and close observation of Edinburgh’s urban environment. The exhibition charts a journey from external inspiration to internal interpretation, transforming the city's myriad impressions into ceramic forms. Gillians practice focuses on how a place's identity can be held within an object, using the elemental nature of clay to anchor specific moments in time.
Each vessel is a form of memory-keeping, shaped by deliberate observation. Her work on the city's architecture and topography informed pieces with strong, structural lines and textured surfaces, echoing the ancient stone and distinctive rooflines. The constantly shifting light and unique atmospheric effects of the Scottish climate became a study in glaze, with layers creating a depth that mirrors a bright, fleeting afternoon sun or the sudden onset of a cool coastal fog. Even mundane moments, such as the view from a city bus, are captured, their repetitive motions translated into subtle patterns. The joyous and colourful chaos of the festival is expressed in energetic marks and vibrant tones, fired into the final pieces. The exhibition thus provides a material archive of a deeply personal and sensory experience of Edinburgh.
