You’ll use an exciting mix of free-motion quilting, heat-reactive materials, and dissolvable fabrics to create a rich, tactile seascape that practically comes to life.
Let your creativity flow as you create your sculpted seashore to capture all the elements of the beach using a stunning blend of fabric, stitch, and heat-altered materials. Perfect for those with some experience in free-motion embroidery
You’ll start with a painted-fabric background, then quilt it with free-motion embroidery to recreate ripples in the sand. Learn how to add striking 3-dimensional details that truly bring your scene to life:
Pebbles & Rock Textures – Paint and manipulate heat-reactive materials that blister and bubble under a heat gun, transforming into realistic pebbles and rocky textures.
Waves and Water Effects – Use heated plastics and layered film to create shimmering, translucent surf, gently lapping the shoreline.
Seaweed & Fronds – Stitch delicate tendrils of underwater plant life using free-motion embroidery on dissolvable film. Watch your threads float free when the stabiliser disappears like magic in water.

This class is ideal for those who already have some basic experience with free-motion embroidery. Ideally, you’ll have taken my 1-day Free-Motion Embroidery workshop and are ready to dive deeper into the world of textile art and surface design. You’ll experiment with new materials and techniques in a fun, supportive environment – and leave with a beautiful, tactile piece of mixed-media textile art inspired by the sea.
All materials provided – just bring your creativity!
This class will challenge you to create a unique sculpted seashore textile art piece. Whether you’re looking to refine your existing skills or try something completely new, this workshop offers the perfect balance of creativity and technical expertise.
What You’ll Learn:
Heat-sensitive fabrics: there are a range of substances that will blister and bubble when heat is applied. These will be used to create the pebbles.
Dissolvable Fabrics: We’ll introduce dissolvable fabrics to bring your creation to life. Using water-soluble stabilizer, you’ll stitch 3D elements to complement the quilted base. Once completed, the stabilizer will be dissolved, leaving behind delicate, textured details that add depth and interest to your artwork, bringing your sculpted seashore to life.
