‘Record of Rain’ is a collaboration between local hand paper-maker and print artist Lauren Smith and Illustrator Thee Oo Thazin from Myanmar. Funded by the British Council’s ‘Connection Through Culture’ grants programme, this series of letterpress prints on handmade paper explores the changing rain patterns of Myanmar. Drawing inspiration from historical poems and traditional weather lore, it aims to illustrate these changing patterns and foster dialogue on the impacts of climate change while acknowledging our connectedness within the Earth’s hydrological system.
As a hand paper maker, Lauren is directly connected to the raw materials and views her work as a collaboration with the living world. The paper she has made for this project includes locally sourced reclaimed rags, while the sheets were formed using a rainwater vat. Using a 19th-century, treadle-operated printing press, the pressure of the plate combined with the pillowy handmade paper leaves a tactile ‘fossil-like’ impression.
In a recent blog post, Lauren shares her thoughts on being connected by rain: “This system is an endless cycle, meaning that the same water falls as rain over and over again…As so-called ‘developed countries’, responsible for a significant portion of carbon emissions, are we prepared to take responsibility for climate refugees? While we build walls and enforce borders, the water on this planet will fall as rain wherever it chooses. One planet, one hydrological system. We share it all.”
The exhibition is open from the 4th to the 22nd June, Wednesdays - Sundays, 11 am - 5 pm, at Leith Makers Gallery, 105 Leith Walk, EH6 8NP. There will be a preview event on Friday, the 6th June which includes a raffle with proceeds donated to Myanmar earthquake relief.
A limited edition of prints will be available for sale, with 50% of profits also donated to Myanmar earthquake relief.
