Getting a good fit is the most challenging—and arguably the most important—part of sewing your own clothes. That’s why this weekend workshop focuses on pattern alteration for perfect fit. No matter how precise your stitching or how beautiful your fabric, poor fit will always overshadow your efforts. A garment that pulls across the bust, gapes at the waist, or sags at the shoulders will never look or feel right, no matter how skilfully it's sewn.
Please note this workshop runs:
Saturday 5th - 10am to 4pm
Sunday 6th - 12pm to 4pm
Understanding how to adjust a pattern to suit your unique body shape is a game-changing skill that will take your dressmaking to the next level. Whether you always find commercial patterns too long in the back, too tight at the bust, or just never quite “right,” this workshop will teach you the techniques to finally achieve a flattering and comfortable fit.
Over the course of this weekend workshop, you’ll be guided through the essential stages involved in perfecting fit—from taking accurate body measurements, to making adjustments directly to your paper pattern, to sewing and fitting a toile (mock-up garment). You’ll learn how to identify common fitting issues and apply the right solutions using proven methods straight from the fashion industry.
We’re thrilled to have Sarah Cuthbert, Artisan Stitch’s resident fashion industry expert, leading this workshop. With over 40 years’ experience in garment technology and design, Sarah brings a wealth of professional insight and a practical, no-nonsense approach to teaching. Her expertise in body proportions, pattern drafting, and fitting will help you understand how to tailor patterns to your shape with confidence.
This workshop is suitable for intermediate dressmakers who have already completed a few garments and are ready to focus on refining their skills. You’ll leave with a toile fitted to your own body, along with the knowledge and skills to alter commercial patterns for future sewing projects.
Say goodbye to disappointing results and hello to garments that truly fit and flatter you. Join us for a transformative weekend of sewing where precision meets creativity—and where you'll gain the confidence to sew garments that look professionally made and feel great to wear.
This is sure to be a popular class and will sell out quickly so don't risk disappointment: Book now (while you remember!)
