While many people associate the years of the Second World War with rationing, it was also a time of great ingenuity in cooking. Hundreds of new recipes were invented, making use of what was available, and responding to shortages, the national mood, and changing trends. Many of these recipes have since been lost to history... but this event offers you a chance to taste some of the forgotten foods of this pivotal era in the history of the world.
Our venue is the ENTCS in Edinburgh: a beautiful Georgian building that is now home to a fully-equipped cookery school. All the implements, equipment and ingredients you'll need are provided, and there'll be help on hand throughout.
Mix and enjoy a classic WWII-era cocktail while we learn about rationing, food on the different fronts of the war, communal kitchens, military rations, shortages, exotic foods during the war, and more.
Then put on an apron, pick a recipe, and put together a classic World War Two dish. Recipes include vinegar cake, Lord Woolton pie, and a mock banana sandwich. While we'll focus mainly on the British home front during this event, we'll have the option to make a few recipes from the trenches and from other nations.
At the end of the evening, we'll present and sample our creations... and you'll have the option to take what you've cooked home with you.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
