Ever wanted to grow your own fruit trees but not sure how to make them thrive?
Grafting is the process of joining two different plants together, so they grow as one. It’s especially valuable for fruit trees, where the rootstock provides disease resistance, drought tolerance, and compact growth, while the scion (the upper part) determines the variety of fruit produced. With the right grafting technique, you can enhance your tree’s health, growth, and fruit production.
During the late winter months, whip-and-tongue grafting is one of the best ways to graft rootstock. This technique is commonly used for apples, pears, and plums.
Whether you're a beginner or just looking to hone your skills, this workshop will give you the knowledge and experience to graft fruit trees, a must-learn for anyone passionate about sustainable gardening and tree care.
This two-hour session is a mix of theory and practical work. You’ll start by learning the fundamentals of grafting, followed by a hands-on practice session with offcuts. Then, you’ll head into the tree nursery, where you'll apply your new skills to graft fruit trees under expert supervision.
What You’ll Learn:
Grafting Theory: Understand the science behind grafting and why it’s used in fruit tree cultivation.
Material Selection: Learn how to choose the right rootstock and scion for successful grafting.
Grafting Tools: Get hands-on with the essential tools, including super-sharp grafting knives. (We’ll even show you how to sharpen these tools for precision work!)
Practical Skills: Start with offcuts to perfect your technique before grafting real specimens.
Supervised Grafting: Take your new skills to our tree nursery, where you’ll graft actual fruit trees under the guidance of our expert, Tom Watson.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll gain the confidence to apply this technique to your own garden projects. Join us for an afternoon of learning, hands-on grafting, and tree care in a beautiful and supportive setting!
