Emily Sutton’s Toy Shop

This December, The Scottish Gallery is delighted to present a special installation exhibition by Emily Sutton.

Emily Sutton’s Toy Shop

About Emily Sutton’s Toy Shop

The exhibition will feature a new series of paintings, alongside prints and a room filled with memorabilia, furniture and Emily Sutton fabric by St Jude’s, presented as Emily Sutton’s Toy Shop.

The Scottish Gallery Press will also launch the first in a series of small format hardback art books. This beautifully illustrated book, which has been
written and designed by Emily Sutton, will launch in December to coincide with the artist’s exhibition.

After a few years of exclusively working on book illustrating, I’m very excited to return to exhibiting at The Scottish Gallery this winter. It’s been great
collaborating with Managing Director Christina Jansen to plan out the space, which is going to be an interpretation of a room in my house and will include some of the objects that have inspired and feature in the artworks on show.

The title of the exhibition - Emily Sutton’s Toy Shop - refers to my love for (and extensive collection of!) old toys seen and acquired from flea markets and
antique shops, both close to home and whilst on my travels. These treasures have had a big influence on the aesthetic of my work as an artist and illustrator, all the way back to my time at Edinburgh College Art when I would regularly spend whole days with my sketchbook, escaping reality at the Museum of Childhood on the Royal Mile.

Alongside the exhibition, I’m delighted to have been given the opportunity to produce a hardback book, published by the Scottish Gallery Press. Co-designed
by the team at the gallery and me, It will contain the pieces in the show, alongside photographs of my house and studio (and perhaps most important of all,
Mouse my dog and constant muse).
Emily Sutton 2024

Biography:
Raised in the iconic North Yorkshire countryside, Emily Sutton has become a true icon of modern day illustration. Garnering huge clients across the publishing and art world including the V&A, The Telegraph, Bloomsbury, Walker Books, Faber and Faber and Random House Emily is fast becoming a household name. Starting her artistic career at the Edinburgh College of Art, Emily’s childhood obsessions were soon brought to life; it was here that her vast and detailed world of curiosities, Victoriana and rosy-cheeked children were born. Going on to Rhode Island School of Design and working on a piece for The Edward Gorey House, Emily’s own style has fast become a recognisable asset.
