Bach Meets Modernity: Hugh Mackay plays Bach, Britten and Demenga

J.S. Bach's iconic Suites for Solo Cello still hold a unique position in today's public ear. Scottish cellist Hugh Mackay, a recent semi-finalist in the 2024 International Bach Competition in Leipzig, performs two of these works, the rich and exuberant 4th Suite in E-flat major and the solemn 5th Suite in C minor, alongside two solo cello works: Britten's 1st Suite for Solo Cello, and Thomas Demenga's 2010 commission for the Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann, 'EFEU'. St Michael's Parish Church provides a beautiful setting for this captivating blend of solo cello works to be heard.

Programme:

Bach | Suite for Solo Cello No. 5 in C minor, BWV 1011
Britten | Suite for Solo Cello No. 1
-interval-
Demenga | EFEU (2010)
Bach | Suite for Solo Cello No. 4 in E-flat major, BWV 1010

Wine and soft drinks will be available for purchase during the interval.
