From Versailles to Charlotte Square - Join us on Bastille Day for an evening exploring the tumultuous lives of the French Royal family and their journey from the glitter and glamour of the Court at Versailles to their relative obscurity as inhabitants of Edinburgh’s Charlotte Square.
This talk will explore the story of the French Royal Family in exile. Discover how three brothers became Kings of France and how revolution ousted them from their thrones.
Filled with treason, regicide, scandal and war, this is a tale which maps the often overlooked events which took place after the execution of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. After being reinstated as Kings of France in 1814, we will discuss how the Bourbon’s would go on to lose the throne for a second time and how Charles X would travel in Europe during his exile. Charles stayed next door to the Georgian House at No.6 (Bute House) in 1832 for a period of two months before moving on to Holyrood Palace.
We will also have on show books associated with the exiled King, including one owned by his grandson (Henri Count of Chambord) which is kindly on loan from the Signet Library.
Please Note: there is no lift in The Georgian House, the talk will take place in the Drawing Room on the first floor.
Light refreshments upon arrival.
