What is EQAM?
Edinburgh Queer art market is an event to showcase the fabulous creative talents of the queer community within a safe and inclusive space. The artists range vastly from illustrators, digital artists, jewelry makers and bakers, to temporary tattooists, tooth gem artists, dice and designers.
How did this come about?
Having gone to many craft fairs with my partner (who runs Enbean art - a very queer and trans art business) I have often noticed the lack of visibly queer art or artists which is disheartening considering the amount of fabulous queer artists out there. Discussion with artists and friends highlighted the barriers to selling many people in the Queer community face such as; fears around selling queer art in a cishet space, being the only queer artist, exclusion and fears around customer base at established markets. Having seen queer art markets popping up I decided if Edinburgh didn't have an established space I would create it.
Accessibility and quiet Hour:
The first hour of the market will be a quiet hour in order to allow folks with sensory requirements the ability to visit
This means reduced and staggered footfall
Lower lighting (if possible)
low/no background music
I would also love to put together a wee basket of fidgets to bring along and if you have any leads on some i can get cheap let me know!
The first hour will also be masked (For those that are able to wear a mask or face covering)
Face coverings will be encouraged but are not mandatory
If you are unable to wear a mask due to your own health (or any other reason) thats okay and please don't worry!! (my partner is super asthmatic and is a stallholder so you won't be alone!)
This will allow immunosuppressed or compromised individuals the ability to attend our event! This will insure their safety and also reduce anxiety around attending an event with lots of folks
This is super important for making thai event accessible as the queer disables community is often forgotten when organisng events and I am trying my best to make this as accessible as possible and inclusive to as many folk as I can.
I have been In contact about getting free masks for this event so don't worry if you don't have any masks left at home as I will be able to provide them
Building accessibility:
The Wee red bar is located within the Edinburgh college of art. The venue has no stairs to access it.
There is a ramp going from the outside carpark/ courtyard area to the hallway outside where the wee red bar is located.
The doors open relatively wide and the ground is flat or ramped at all points
There is toilets and accessible toilets near the venue
Their is disabled parking In the ECA and surrounding area.
If you need help caring anything in there will be some folks about
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
