Paste papers were one of the earliest methods used to decorate paper. They were used as book covers and end papers from the late 16th century to the 18th century. One of the distinctive qualities of paste paper is the rich and slightly 3-dimensional patterns and designs.
In this workshop, you will learn to make textured papers by applying brushes, hand tools, or household objects to the surface of paper or card coated with thin coloured paste. The paste is worked, scraped, and patterned while it is still wet.
These decorative paste papers will be used as the covers for the buttonhole-bound notebooks in the second part of the workshop. Buttonhole stitch binding is a non-adhesive type of open-spine binding that is perfect for sketchbooks, journals, and notebooks. Paste papers can also be used as gift wrap or as stand-alone prints. Buttonhole stitch binding is a simple sewn binding, and no prior knowledge or experience is required.
This workshop is designed for beginners or anyone who wants to try something new. All necessary tools, equipment, and materials will be provided, and tea, coffee, and light snacks will be available. Please bring a packed lunch with you, wear old, warm clothes, and if you have long hair, tie it back.
