Award-winning pianist Matthew Shiel will perform a selection of Chopin's favourite piano pieces including his 'Raindrop' Prélude, his 'Minute Waltz' and his 'Revolutionary' Étude in C minor - Chopin's pianistic showpiece which heralded a revolution in piano technique.
It might surprise you that Chopin had a Scottish lover - Jean Stirling of West Calder. She was affectionately nicknamed 'Chopin's widow' in the press and Chopin was inspired to compose two nocturnes after her which will be performed tonight.
Chopin’s Funeral March (from Piano Sonata No.2, Op.35) is arguably the best-known funeral march of all time. It has become an archetypal evocation of death and was played at the graveside during Chopin's own burial on 30 October 1849 at Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. His contemporary and friend, Schumann remarked that the Marche funèbre "has something repulsive.”
Tonight, this magnificent and historic 19th Century chapel is transformed by moonlight and candlelight into a place of inspiration as we celebrate Frédéric Chopin, poet of the piano and pay tribute to a true musical icon!
