During this seated event at Birch Tree Gallery on 14th October, Edinburgh-based artist Ruth Thomas, RSW will make and demonstrate brushes and then create a momigami fabric piece.
About Meet the aritst: Ruth Thomas, RSW - making brushes and momigami
During the talk, Ruth Thomas, RSW (originally from Australia, but currenly residing in Edinburgh artist) will make some brushes, demonstrate their use and then create a momigami fabric piece.
'As an artist I am always searching for ways to make a closer connection to the landscape I am aiming to evoke. For some time I have been making my own brushes from things I have foraged on my walks. Made from found materials including driftwood, lichen covered twigs, old bits of boat, beach plastic, fibrous grasses and seaweed, and bound with eco-dyed silks and recycled wools: each brush has its own unique story to tell. These gestural brushes evoke memory of place, whilst their unusual materials create a freshness and spontaneity in their mark making. Recently I have discovered the ancient Japanese art of momigami in which paper is kneaded until it softens and feels like fabric.' - says Ruth.
Registration is essential, even if it is a free event.
